Energy Performance Ratings - There are several energy-performance factors that a homeowner should consider when purchasing replacement windows and doors.
Types of Replacement Windows
A homeowner should also be familiar with the various types of replacement windows, each having pros and cons.
- Wood replacement windows provide natural insulation and are aesthetically pleasing; however, they require routine maintenance and protection against weather. Failing to maintain wooden windows could result in rotting, splitting, or peeling.
- Aluminum replacement windows are lightweight, durable, and require little maintenance. In humid climates, however, aluminum windows often fall victim to condensation. They are also not very energy-efficient.
- Vinyl replacement windows are durable, inexpensive, and virtually maintenance-free; however, they can warp if subjected to extremely hot or cold climates.
- Steel replacement windows are weather resistant and last longer than any other type of window; however, they will rust if improperly maintained and are a poor thermal insulator.
- Fiberglass replacement windows are relatively new to the market. They are extremely durable, good insulators, and very rarely show any signs of age. If you can afford them (they’re twice the price of vinyl windows), fiberglass windows may be your best bet.
