Easy Ways to Save Money on Home Heating
There are multiple ways to save money on home heating. The following
three tips alone, for example, can potenitally reduce your electric bill by up to $1,000 a year.
- Why heat your entire home when you probably spend most of your time in just one or two rooms? Rather than waste heat in unused rooms, use space heaters to heat individual rooms (and only heat the room if someone is in it). Space heaters are efficient, portable, and generate immediate heat. - Turn off all space heaters and central heat when you’re asleep. Unless you live in a region with a very cold climate, you’ll most likely stay warm enough with the heat off if you cover up with blankets. If you don’t want to turn your heat totally off at night, try lowering it to a chilly, but still comfortable, 60 degrees.
- Stop paying for heat that you aren’t around to enjoy. Turn off all space heaters and central heat when you’re not at home (e.g. when you’re at work).
You can also save money on home heating by ensuring that your home is properly insulated, and that all cracks along windows and doors are tightly sealed. For those of you with hardwood floors, adding rugs or carpet will make your home feel much more warm and cozy in the winter.
