Energy Saving Air Conditioning
Energy Saving Air Conditioning Tips | Energy Efficient Air Conditioners
The #1 way to lower your electric bill is to reduce home cooling costs. Air conditioning
zaps electricity, plain and simple. Cooling costs account for around 20% of the average U.S. home’s electric bill. In warmer states, such as Texas, Arizona, and Florida, air conditioning could account for up to 70% of your monthly energy bill.
Be Conservative. To lower your electric bill, simply set your AC to a higher temperature. Granted, the higher temp may take a couple of days to get used to, but it’ll save you a pocketful of money each month. Remember, every degree counts. Adjusting your thermostat from 75 to 77, and then a few days later (you may want to ease into the transition) from 77 to 80, could reduce your electric bill by 15-20% (around $25/mo., or $300/year!).
Be Efficient. If you’re dead-set on using an air conditioner, there are four important things to keep in mind.
- Make sure your AC unit is the correct size for the room or house (a large window AC unit for a small room wastes electricity and money).
- Ensure that your AC is running efficiently. Check, seal, and insulate your cooling ducts to ensure that costly cool air is not leaking out and going to waste.
- Clean or replace air filters regularly to optimize air flow and reduce energy-use!
- Swap your outdated AC for an eco-friendly Energy Star unit.
Other great ways to save money, lower your electric bill, and reduce your home’s cooling costs are to use fans and set your air conditioner on a timer.
